How Do I Calculate What I'm Currently Paying in Fees?
How do I double-check what I am currently paying in fees?
Calculate your current fees in 4 easy steps:
Step 1: Locate a statement that shows fees being withdrawn.
Typically fees are charged by the quarter, so you will not see them every month. Try statements from Jan, April, July, or October.
Step 2: Add all of the fees on that month's statement together. You are looking for advisory fees, platform fees, etc.
Example:
Advisory Fee*: $781.25
+ Platform Fee*: $250.00
Total Fees: $1,031.25
Step 3: Multiply that amount by 4, since you are being charged 4 times per year.
Example:
$1,031.25 × 4 = $4,125.00/year
Step 4: Take this amount and divide it by the starting balance for the month in which your fees were charged.
Example:
Account Balance on 1/1/2025: $250,000
Total Fees: $4,125
÷ Account Balance ÷ $250,000
=Fee Percentage = 0.0165
0.0165 × 100 = 1.65% in fees each year
You’re done! This is the % you are paying in total fees.
If it is different from what you were quoted or what you thought you were paying, you should ask questions and get answers in writing.
